The Archduchy of Vane is a nation defined by a precarious verticality, existing as a series of specialised dependencies anchored to the central titan of Grand Vane. While the capital serves as the pressurised heart and seat of power, the Archduchy’s territory stretches across a rugged landscape of jagged peaks and deep, mist-filled valleys.
Life outside the city walls is hardy and practical, functioning as the Archduchy's primary organs of extraction. These rural holdfasts are responsible for the relentless harvest of timber from forests at the base of the western mountains and the quarrying of massive stone blocks needed to keep the capital's structural integrity intact, and yet cannot keep up with demand in the same way that Timber-Reach and The Iron Union can. Despite their vital importance, these settlements exist in a state of perpetual debt to the capital; they provide the raw materials for the city's bones, but in return, they rely entirely on Grand Vane for the refined aether-coal, light canisters and medical-grade filters necessary to survive.
The political landscape is a study in rigid, top-down control centred on the dual figureheads of the High Spire. Archduke Valerius holds the reins of the civil government, commanding a sprawling network of Ministers who regulate industries, manage guilds, and craft state propaganda while skimming lucrative profits. Hovering above this bureaucracy is Solara VII (Elara Vane), the Archduke’s niece and the nation’s symbolic Head of State. Her role is as much mechanical as it is political; she spends her days physically integrated into the city’s core machinery to power and stabilise the light towers.
Geographically and economically, the Archduchy relies heavily on a network of external dependencies to survive. To the northeast, its industrial survival is tied to its ironclad partnership with the Iron Thistle Union (ITU)—trading the Archduchy's terraced crops and timber for heavy metals, copper, and ordnance. To the west, the autonomous Glass Isles hold a crucial bargaining chip by supplying the high-precision solar-reactive glass required to keep the capital's light-towers burning. Meanwhile, the grim, ash-covered necropolis-state of Sallow Heath handles the massive volume of the Archduchy's dead, maintaining a quiet, functional symbiosis with Grand Vane.
